Abstract

This study aims to examine how multidimensional sustainability models and assessment approaches contribute to the development of holistic sustainability in manufacturing systems. A qualitative systematic literature review was conducted to synthesize previous conceptual and empirical studies concerning economic, environmental, social, technological, organizational, circular economy, and lifecycle dimensions of manufacturing sustainability. The review identifies a transition from fragmented, indicator based approaches toward integrated, hierarchical, and systems oriented sustainability frameworks. The findings indicate that holistic sustainability requires the integration of sustainability dimensions, performance indicators, manufacturing system levels, Industry 4.0 technologies, circular economy principles, human centered practices, and lifecycle perspectives. The review further reveals that sustainability elements are interconnected through synergies, trade offs, dependencies, and enabling relationships. The study contributes a conceptual basis for developing more comprehensive sustainability assessment frameworks that support strategic decision-making and sustainable transformation in manufacturing systems.
